NEW ACQUISITIONS - AUGUST 2010

Steven Webb

Red Delicious

Steven Webb "Parallel #1" 40" x 30" Type C Print

For over twenty years I have documented the social and aesthetic climate of Latin America, complemented with extensive travels in Europe, Africa, and Asia. My working method in these areas could best be described as ‘street style’ in approach. The American West offers a more meditative approach to visualization. What results are un-peopled images, although the hand of man is often evident. By attempting to frame (re-frame) the world in my own way, hopefully, I am able to reveal it in a unique and truthful spirit. -- Steven Webb

PARALLELS

The latest series 'Parallels' emphasizes abstraction, adhering to the notion of correlation / symmetry, holding that abstract forms, lines, and colors may represent corresponding inner states, emotions and ideas

Clair Elan

Dream Series #6

Clair Elan "Curious"24" x 18" Oil on Canvas

My purpose is to capture a fleeting moment – the moment of being illuminated by an idea, the second of surrender, or a pause – poignant moments in the journey of life where the authentic self is most clearly revealed.

I try to demonstrate the solidity of the seemingly untouchable whilst, in contrast, painting the literal physicality as it really is – temporary, disappearing, impermanent, using a hyper-realistic painting style to emphasize the depth of field, the way our eyes unwittingly observe everyday, focusing on just one point as all else falls away.

'Illumination in Flux'

With imagination, belief, creative will, a person's light can be a concrete connecting thread that is indestructible and enduring. Whether we feel
inspiration directly from the universe or through a writer, painter or prophet, it is all the same light and binds us to each other as one whole.
Just as a star in the galaxy still shines its billion year old light on us here on earth after it has long gone, past lives' energies endure & continue
to eternally inspire us. The marks we make, the lives we help and the energy we put into this life will affect generations ahead as we wander through the
light & shadows of the lives that went before us - this is how we are eternal.

Christopher Schulz

The Great Age That Comes

Christopher Schulz "Home on a Plain"48" x 48" Mixed Media on Canvas

Although two different disciplines, the act of painting and the act of sculpting share a common soul and arrive at similar points. Whereas a painting connects the participant to a two dimensional window and extension - inviting emotion, delivering intent and enabling sensory exploration derived from color and texture. Equivocally compelling, however spatially more obvious, a sculpture invites a physical participation, art interacting in a three dimensional arena with the participants. My sculptural works are interpretive to a real world stimuli - a metaphorical manifestation, a physical embodiment to themes inclusive to "our" place in the world, in society, in simple human interaction and the basic trials and tribulations which labor us all. An esoteric permanence, similar to the hieroglyphics of ancient Egypt, depicting everyday life and man's relationship with forces unknown.

My intent with oils and mixed media is an extension of my interpretation of the beauty and simplicity that I see and feel in art - the color, shapes, textures, spacial relationships and symmetry - all emotionally connecting, compelling and a driving force in my work. Sculpting and painting are complimentary creative forces and much needed extensions which I am undeniably compelled to use. I am able to communicate some ideas more potently using one or the other as my communicative tool. I am in constant flux and evolution and this is most noticeable through both my sculptures and paintings. I continue to keep myself open to the creative process, looking for new and more effective ways to translate my intent and vision. My surrender to the process and my desire to explore past my boundaries, involving new processes and using new tools is what keeps me evolving as an artist and it's this evolution which is pertinent to an artist and the infinite inquisitive exploration that is art.
